The significance of 8am

I almost feel gluttonous as I look at the clock and it reads 7:59.  This is the latest we’ve ever let Geneva slept and even on weekends I keep my alarm clock set on 6:45 so that we keep her on her routine.  However, after the worst night of teething pain to date, I turned off the alarm and let us all sleep in a little.  She is still not yet awake, but I will go and get her in a few minutes.

In my mind, I’m saying a little prayer that her efforts have been fruitful.  See, last night was the third straight night in a row that she has been up with pain in her mouth.  Yesterday evening, our typically smiley, easy going baby was somewhat of a cantankerous bear-cub and last night she was up briefly several times from 8:30-2:00 and then completely up from 2:00-4:00.  After giving her Motrin before bed, there was not a whole lot we could do for the pain (oral gel does not seem to help), so at 2am, I went and got her to put her into our bed where I thought we could at least comfort her through the worst of it.  Though it did seem to help her, we were all kept awake as she played, talked, moved around, and generally resisted sleep.  At 4am, we gave a dose of Tylenol and put her back into her crib, where she was blessedly sleeps until now, 8:05am.

If it were a work night, I would have taken the morning off due to exhaustion.

Maybe it is silly to pray for teeth, and as a nursing mother I may regret it, but since her doctor told us that after babies get the first teeth, the rest tend to come easier, I can’t help but hope for speedy tooth relief.
